Eric Karsenti

For the first time in history, in June 2017 there has been an UN conference for the protection of our oceans. At this year’s International Sciene Festival - Geist Heidelberg, the protection of our oceans is going to be a topic for discussion as well.

French biologist Eric Karsenti is not only one of the important experts on cell and molecular biology, but also EMBL senior scientist and scientific director of the Tara Oceans expedition.

For three years, the schooner Tara sailed the world’s oceans, undertaking research to understand the impact of climate change on the huge variety of marine organisms. This lecture by Karsenti will give an insight into his work and the expedition.

“Our ocean’s micro-organisms absorb most of the carbon dioxide from our atmosphere and produce 50 percent of oxygen. Without these micro-organisms, humans wouldn’t even inhabit planet Earth. Without them, humans are threatened with extinction,” says Karsenti.
