How the Webb telescope unravels the world
Almost exactly one year ago, on Christmas Day 2021, the most expensive and complex mission in space history was launched: the James Webb Space Telescope, the largest and most powerful telescope ever put into space.
The joint project of the United States, Europe and Canada combines many research goals: the search for biomolecules in the atmospheres of extrasolar planets, the study of deeply hidden star-forming regions, the search for the first light of the universe, the discovery of the oldest black holes ...
But how exactly are these goals to be achieved? How does the Webb telescope unravel our world?
Prof. Dr. Günther Hasinger was appointed ESA Director of Science by the Council of the European Space Agency in 2017. In 2011, after holding positions at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, both in Garching, he took over as director of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii, which covers all areas of astronomy.
