Medical treatments are becoming increasingly precise and personalized. One fascinating area is microrobotics. Here, scientists are working on developing tiny robots that are so small that they can move through the finest blood vessels. The size of the components of these microrobots is in the nano range, sometimes smaller than the wavelength of light and only visible with an electron microscope. Some microrobots are to be driven by rotating magnetic fields, diagnose disease signals from the body and transport active substances to the diseased tissue in a targeted manner. This development opens up unimagined possibilities, for example in cancer therapy.
Prof. Dr. Simone Schürle-Finke is a pioneer in the field of micro- and nanorobotics. As a biomedical engineer, she heads the Laboratory for Medical Microsystems in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich.
