Ulrike Draesner
She seeks to bear witness to the beauty and fragility of the Arctic, exploring our connection to this endangered habitat. To this end, Ulrike Draesner embarks on two journeys aboard small ships: to Spitsbergen in the summer and through the fjords from Tromsø in the winter. Polar day and night open up special spaces of resonance, and in the outer silence, what had gone unheard becomes audible: living creatures, elements, and atmospheres that, with heightened senses, touch travelers directly—physically, psychologically, and spiritually. In a fresh, nature-infused language, the author explores how the Arctic concerns us and can provide answers to the question of who we are.
Prof. Dr. Ulrike Draesner, following international visiting professorships and poetry lectures, has been teaching as a professor at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig since 2018. She has received numerous awards for her novels, essays, and poems, including the 2020 German Prize for Nature Writing for the first essay from *Radio Silence*. In 2021, she was awarded the Grand Prize of the German Literature Fund for her entire body of work.
The reading will take place as a “dark reading” without artificial lighting.
