No medical term is used as naturally as placebo, even by laymen. Most people have an approximate idea of what is meant, but rather few can explain exactly how and what causes placebo effects.
Thanks to dynamic, mainly neuroscientifically oriented research in recent years, knowledge is constantly growing, up to the - perhaps exaggerated - realization that placebo accounts for about 50 percent of almost every type of therapy.
In the brain, messenger substances are released which dock to the same receptors as, for example, normal drugs. The placebo effect, which can only be brought about by medical action - through attention, conversation etc. - also deserves more attention and should be used accordingly.
