No medical term is used as naturally, even by lay people, as placebo. Most have a rough idea of what is meant, rather few can explain exactly how and by what placebo effects arise.

Yet, thanks to dynamic, primarily neuroscientifically oriented research in recent years, knowledge is constantly growing, culminating in the - perhaps exaggerated - realization that a placebo component of about 50 percent is involved in almost every type of therapy.
In the brain, messenger substances are released that dock onto the same receptors as, for example, normal drugs. The placebo effect that medical action alone can bring about - via attention, conversations, etc. - also deserves more attention and should be used accordingly.
