Every day we create billions of digital objects with seemingly unlimited lifetimes. But are their lifetimes really unlimited? After all, this data must be stored on storage devices, read by humans, and interpreted by software in the physical world.
If the bits, the information, can no longer be read or interpreted - because the corresponding software is no longer running on the current operating systems - the information is lost. If we do not quickly solve the technical, legal and financial challenges of long-term archiving, digitally speaking, we will face a dark age.
Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, winner of the ACM A.M. Turing Award, also known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet", will speak at the DAI as part of his participation in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). The HLF is an international networking meeting, where every year 200 highly gifted young scientists in mathematics and computer science meet the best in their field.
