What is(s) the human being?
Our entire existence is deeply rooted in what we eat every day, our food: "If you want to live ethically well, you will also have to eat well - fortunately not a particularly unpleasant task," says Lemke. Our diet is immovably at the center of being human: "I think, therefore I am" falls short here - shouldn't it be "We eat, therefore we are"?
Despite the great importance of our food, there is a lack of appreciation towards the basis of life and awareness of nutrition. A gastrosophical revolution, a radical turnaround is called for, in which the "essence" of man is revealed: The tomato is round, so that nutrition can change its direction!
Harald Lemke is a philosopher, book author and director of the International Forum Gastrosophy, a transdisciplinary think tank on nutrition issues. He teaches at the Center for Gastrosophy at the University of Salzburg and at the Slow Food University of Gastronomic Sciences Pollenzo (Italy). In addition, he holds visiting professorships in Kyoto and Shanghai and is co-founder of the Nutrition Council Hamburg.
