Charles Foster
What kind of creature is man? Charles Foster has embarked on an immersive exploration of three crucial eras in the evolution of human consciousness to find out. In the forests of England, he hunted and gathered like a Cro-Magnon man more than 40,000 years ago. He lived in a reconstructed settlement from the Neolithic period, the time when humans settled down and began to domesticate animals. He visited colleges, cafes, dissecting rooms and art galleries to relive the Age of Enlightenment. What conclusion did this epochal journey through time bring him to? What was man, what is he, and what will he be?
Dr. Charles Foster is a best-selling author, ethicist, veterinarian, and lawyer who teaches at Oxford University. He has written numerous books, including Being a Beast (2016), which won the Ig Nobel Prize in Biology, and The Screaming Sky (2021). His academic research is primarily concerned with human identity, the limits of the concept of autonomy, and the meaning of human dignity.
