Günter Ziegler

Where we see only a Christmas star or an elaborate knot, the, “popstar amongst mathematicians”, Günter Ziegler, will show us mathematics in all its beauty. In his book, “Mathematik – Das ist doch keine Kunst!” the geometry professor considers 24 images which, at first sight, appear to have nothing at all to do with maths.

Professor Dr Günter Ziegler, born in 1963 in Munich, former President of the German Mathematical Society (Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung, DMV), is currently Professor of Geometry at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 2010, he appeared on Stefan Raab’s TV show, “Total” where he attempted to rid audiences of their fear of numbers. Ziegler has been recognised for both his ability to explain mathematical principles, and for his contribution to mathematical research. He has been awarded a number of prizes, including the Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz Prize.
