The "Internet of Animals

Recording the natural behaviors of animals has changed dramatically. Where previously hours of observation were necessary, transmitters can now be used: Telemetry, the collection and analysis of data by means of transmitters, facilitates this work immensely and enables data transfer in real time. But how far do these possibilities go? Martin Wikelski talks about the ICARUS project, his dream of a satellite network that can continuously track global animal migrations from space - an "Internet of Animals." He is doing pioneering work here.

Prof. Dr. Martin Wikelski, biologist and ornithologist, is director at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Biology (special field animal migrations) in Radolfzell, and honorary professor at the University of Konstanz. He has been a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2014; in 2021, he received the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg.
